Five-picture deal?

I was reading an article about Orson Welles. In that article, it was mentioned that during filming of Touch of Evil (1958), Universal proposed a five-picture deal with Welles (but later everything changed). Just would like to know what is a five-picture deal? Does that mean he was offered to direct 5 pictures or does this have a different meaning?

Yes that's what it means. Like a 5 year contact to a basketball player. He is contracted to directed 5 pictures, and often times these contracts lead to directors reluctantly doing films the studio holds them to. Brian De Palma - Snake Eyes
