archived-videos Feature film shot on t3i.

So my XHA1 died and my friend's kind enough to lend me his T3I. Nice cam. Certainly lacking a lot of stuff I was used to, but great quality. Anyway, I'm in the middle of production for my latest no budget feature film entitled NOWHERE JOHNNY, a neo-noir type film. I don't really like labeling a genre on my films. So I don't really know what kind of genre it really is. There's a love story, there are gangsters, boxers, and, yeah, I just like to not label it.

Anyway, check out the 30 second teaser that focuses solely on one of the characters. It's vague, so don't expect much.

And please like and share the Facebook page, because I'd really appreciate a following so when it's done I'll have an audience and whanot: NOWHERE JOHNNY on FACEBOOK!

Here's the teaser, watch in HD:

I like how the trailer actually allows you to have a sense of what a scene is about. A lot of trailers are so quick cut that in some shots, you literally have no idea what the characters are talking about.

We wrapped Nowhere Johnny recently. I've done quite a few teasers and now 3 full trailers, but mainly to hone my editing skills and get the movie noticed. Hopefully, it has inspired some people along the way too. Lol. This is the most "epic" one, if you will. Haha. Enjoy and do share if you like it .

My (honest opinion) on your trailers.

There is a real mix of quality in your shots from the trailers. Some of the shots are absolutely beautiful and extremely professional looking and wouldn't look out of place in a Michael Mann digitally shot film (i.e. 'Collateral' or 'Miami Vice'). Others, look far less polished but these are down to lighting and shot choices more than anything and could be fixed somewhat further in post (I am assuming this isn't a finished product).

Really, really love the location shots, the tunnel shot and ALL of the shots in low lighting - impressive.

My other criticism (and it's very minor) is the font used in your first few trailers (the blue one). It looks very amateur-ish - I'd stick to the font you've used in the final trailer from now on, but that's just my personal opinion.

Lastly, the sound isn't completely crisp - maybe this was more noticeable as the quality of your images is very good and I noticed the sound more. There is a lot of background noise/feedback in your recordings - what mic did you use?

Positives
-----------
Some EXCELLENT low light shots
EXCELLENT location/establishing shots

Negatives
------------
Some shots are far less impressive than others (esp your brighter shots)
Sound doesn't sound very polished or crisp (lots of feedback/background noise during dialogue)

Regardless, I genuinely would watch this - what are your plans regarding distribution?

Thanks a bunch for professional honesty. And just mentioning my film in the same breath as Michael Mann is an honor. One of my favorite filmmakers growing up.

I totally caught on amateur blue font feel when I made the last trailer. I'm sticking to what I did in the last trailer, most likely. Cool that you noticed that too.

Would you mind pointing out specifically which shots seemed unpolished to you, londonfilmmaker? And what specifically is wrong with the brighter shots to you, overexposure? High mids?

I used a RODE VideoMic and I hadn't "reduce noise" in the last trailer and it's difficult to control outdoor ambience. Plus, I'm not a sound guy in all honesty. I wanted a legit sound person for this film. But no dough.

Glad you'd wanna see it. I wanna see it too! Lol. There's a difference watching as an editor... and I'm just planning on sending it off to festivals after I'm finished editing. See what it does. If nothing happens with festivals, Netflix/iTunes is the mission.
