favorite Favorite screenwriters

I'm just curious to see what screenwriters are popular in general, and who's are the most fun to read. My personal favorites are Coppola, Sorkin, Mankiewicz and Tarantino. I'm really interested to hear who the IndieTalk community's favorite screenwriters are.

I'm old-school.

William Goldman, Ben Hecht, David Mamet and Paul Schrader.

As for Sorkin, I'm sorry but the guy is a train-wreck. He obviously doesn't believe in subtext since everything on everybody's mind comes bubbling up out of the froth in their brain like a thick gooey sludge of word-paste in his dialogue. Some of it is witty, yes. But it's about as elegant as an hydraulic sledgehammer. Just my opinion. :P

Robert Towne. It's hard to make an original screenplay come across as an adaptation from a novel, but Chinatown proves it can be done.
