Ever see how many people want to work in this biz?

Thinking about going to school to be a DP or editor? Have fun trying to stand out in the crowd.
I looked on LA411.com and here's what I found. Keep in mind that these are just the people who happened to list themselves on this one particular site.

1,116 DP's
707 Editors
527 Producers

Blade is quite the negative voice on these boards.

I don't see why those numbers are depressing. In fact, the actual numbers
of working professionals is higher than that. Those are only people who choose
to list in that one place. I'd guess that's less than a quarter of the people working
and about a tenth of the people trying to get work in those fields.

And people are making a pretty good living at it. If they can, so can you.

Optical illusion

I worked for a while on the Vuze network. There were 45,000 people around the world uploading original videos. Over the course of a year, I took the number one spot, and held the front page of the entire service for 6 months. (I made a 22 minute daily show in HD)

It doesn't matter how many there are out there, it only matters how good you are. Produce something people want to watch, and you'll get noticed. I read somewhere on this forum that 80% of indie films get booted by distro for unlicensed music. So you can just assume that a majority of your competition is outright stupid, if 8 in 10 are just shooting themselves in the foot on purpose like that.

My point is, that crowd is a lot smaller than it looks.

Yes, one upside, about 80% of the would be filmakers are some combination of

1. Totally talentless
2. Stupid
3. Lazy
4. Made no efffort to learn even the rudiments of their craft.

Generally the cream will rise to the top eventually.
