Dual Mono

I have been recording in Dual Mono on my PMD 661. I am using audacity to check out my audio clips but I have been having problems trying to get the 2nd audio clip to play separate. The 2nd audio clip is right below, any ideas?

I don't know I mean I set them for Dual mono so I would assume they are in mono channels right? I mean I can see the 2nd audio clip, it is directly below the main one. I just don't know how to listen to the 2nd clip by it's self in audacity, as well as any other future audio software I plan on using once I get my computer.

This is great, in the other post you were saying something about " Inferior play back system" What sucks is all I have to play back my audio on set is my recorder. and like I said in my other posts. the audio never sounded distorted when I played it back. which is why I was surprised why It sounded a bit distorted in some parts of the dialogue.

So, you were able to listen to the two audio tracks separately?

Despite everything you do, unless you spend A LOT of money on headphones, you are not going to hear everything when you're on set (there's always "bleed") - at least until you have A LOT of experience. And you still need the great headphones.

A while back I got to try some custom headphones - they were the Sennheiser HD-250 II speakers/electronics put into very high quality ear protectors (the kind used in airports and on pistol ranges). (They also make them with the MDR-7506 speakers/electronics.) Even with all my experience it was amazing how much I missed when using regular headphones.

What audio interface, speakers, etc. are you using when you edit the dialog? That may be what is distorting, or you may be pushing the levels too hard in the DAW itself and you're getting digital distortion/clipping.

I Don't have any actgualy software yet I have been using audacity just to check my audio. The head phones I am using are the 7506. Needless to say when I selected the clipping on audacity it seemed that my audio files are fine, well most of them I haven't check every single one ( so many takes)

What surprised me was one audio clip wasn't clipped after I specifically saw the meter go over when I was on set, I wonder why. but who knows maybe it went to -0.

I did find out how to separate them I just messed with some settings on the right hand side.

I think in the future I'm going to try to lower the gain some more, problem is, some of my actors are very low talkers.

Different audio devices and audio software display a red clip alert at different points, some at -0.3dB, some at -0.1dB, some at 0dB and some allow you to set the point at which you want the clip alert to be displayed. So it could be that you've been lucky and hit the clip alert without actually clipping. It could also be that only a few samples have clipped and so it's not really noticeable just listening to the recording, however, this sort of clipping can become a problem in post.

luckily I got multiple takes on it, and it was just some one screaming.

But really weird how the only thing that showed up to be clipped so far in my audio tracks is the home made take slate.(hands clapping) I feel like my audio should be distorted but audicity says different so I suppose so far i am in the clear. but I guess I am wrong

Your recorder is creating a stereo wave file.
It does not create separate files for L and R input.
It routes one mic input into BOTH L and R channels setting one channel input level some amount lower.

After import just right click on the stereo file and select "split stereo track"
