Does anyone know...

Hey guys, whats up? I am just writing this post to ask a question...
Do you guys know how long it takes to copyright something? Has anyone here copyrighted something before? Thanks guys! :)

You already own the copyright to your own works, but when registering the copyright, the effective date will be when the copyright office receives the material.

Ok so will I need to wait till I get the certificate to start doing anything with it like filming or any pitching to producers to film it? thanks guys!

Copyright...

Not really... As posted previously, your copyright is valid once you complete something. I'm assuming you're talking about a script...

Definitely send it in for copyright but you don't have to wait until then to start filming or pitching. To film or pitch, go ahead and register it with the WGAw for now. You can register online or print it out and send it in with the appropriate fee of $20 for non-members --$10 for members.

I've never registered online... Always sent in a physical copy. Sending it in normally takes no more than two weeks to get your registration number. I would imagine you get it a lot faster by registering online. Once you have your registration number, start pitching. If you want to start filming, you don't have to wait for the registration... Just start filming.

I needed a copyright for both the script and film of YOU ARE ALONE...both took about 2 1/2 months from the day mailed until I received the certificate.

I also always register my scripts online with the Writers Guild before submitting (that's enough initial protection)...and I've never had a problem. (Usually their certificate comes within a week.)

Strangely, when doing the low-budget WGA agreement for YOU ARE ALONE, I needed the copyright certificate to complete the package...their own certificate wasn't enough.

Hope that helps.
