cinematography D.I.Y. steady cam anyone?

I need to fashion a D.I.M. (do it myself) steady cam for an HV20. Anyone care to share any tips, links or experience on the subject?

Lowe's is a stones throw from our place which makes that part easy.

I won't be running around with this rig through the woods or up stairs, etc. Just need to get some smooth movements in a studio environment.

Thanks yo.

I built one of those a few years ago for my HV20. I had to use a smaller weight, but it worked pretty well, even though I'm not the most graceful operator.

One thing I added was some padding around the pipes. That helped to dampen a little of the shakiness in my hands. Also made it more comfortable to hold. I just used some of that foam tubing used for insulating pipes. Lowe's sells it.

Cool. It does seem like a 5lb. weight might be overkill. I think this will be the rig I put together.

Joe, did you find the 5 pounds excessive or just right? Maybe it depends on the camera.

Does your gimball move? I have 4 lbs balancing a 10lb camera, but you need the vest and arm to run it. On a smaller rig, it's about a pound to fly a 3 pound camera and that is not a problem hand-held.

Here's what I went with! This super simple "Steady Stick" is a variation of one posted above.

I like the floor flange mount for the camera because it saved me from drilling, it already has a flat surface, and it offers me a few options for attaching lens flags or something else up top.

Thanks for all the input, folks! I'll be sure to post some footage of it in action. Cheers. :D
