connecting shotgun mic to computer

i tried connecting my ntg2 to my computer to try to record some voice things on. but whenever i record theres a backround hum or something that also keeps the volume down. im using a xlr converter and xlr cable both from mogami. im recording the audio in sony vegas pro 8. anybody have suggestions on what i can do? thanks
p.s. it works great when plugged into my camcorder

i am using the mic 3.5mm input, i believe. It's the color pink and is next to the headphone input, exact same shape.
If you are sure that the input you are using is the mic input then you make sure that you have a fresh battery in the NTG-2 (they tend to "eat" batteries relatively fast).

You also need to check on the input levels on whatever software you are using and also the computers interfacing panel.

You would be much better off with an audio card or an AV card.
