Community Project: UFO Scene

Need scene ideas for a hoax UFO sighting video.

Constraints:
  1. Two characters. One "shooting" the video on cell phone, the other ???
  2. Location is a clear cut area in the mountains with trees near by. Mountains in the background.
  3. They see a large UFO fly over head.
  4. funny

Two characters. One "shooting" the video on cell phone, the other ???

The "shooter" is surreptitiously filming his friend taking a leak (or something equally embarrassing). The sound of the UFO intrudes first, making the pisser turn around and piss on his friends shoes.

You can play around with two inexperienced campers trying to build or cook over an open fire, or put up a tent, or... The sound of the UFO intrudes...

I'm slightly unconvinced as to why they'd be shooting on the phone on the first place. Alcove provides a decent suggestion.

Maybe this is a chance to play on the recent popularity in snapchat? The app annoys me to no end, but my flatmates (and even my own mother) use it constantly, and videoing someone peeing is something someone using snapchat would do (at least in my experience).

Though I don't know how plausible it is that a video snapchat ends up online - I don't really know how the app works. Maybe Vine instead?

Of course, both suggestions may have issues with using brandnames or whatever. And potentially associated too much with youth culture.

However, I think some reference to the recent inclination in society to constantly mediate events (to the point that mediating an event becomes an event itself, often more important than the actual event) is believable. Maybe one wants a picture of them setting up their fire for his new facebook picture? etc.

I thought it was pretty brilliant. Nothing popped immediately into my head, I'll tell you.

I suppose if there's a problem with believability, as CAAC says, they could be drunk or high? If drug references are a problem, it could be merely implied, not explicit.

One of them is peeing? ;)
"Shit! Now my shoes and pants are dirty!"

I'm thinking out loud now:
what about making 3 video's and put them on a dedicated youtube channel.
We plan when we release the video's one by one as if the channel is some kind of vlog of campers/hikers/whatever.
First video: sleeping in a tent filming a selfie commenting on a weird sound in the night that is in the background.
Second video: a week later: weird footprints in the same area.
Third video: starts as a joke: "I found the source of the weird sound" filming the pee-er in the back when that noise starts again: the UFO!

And even before those video's we can put some trivial outdoor/nature/travel/pub stuff online to make the channel more 'real'.

(I know: a lot of work)

BTW,
I think it would be great to shoot making of footage, so we can have BTS from every unit. Plus we can make one bigger making-of combining BTS footage and maybe some interviews from different units plus edit and sound post BTS footage.

He should pee over his own shoes, otherwise the other one has to be inappropriately close.

More important:
is it at night, or a little after sunset?
At day would be more difficult to make it look good.
At night it shouldn't come to close: light doesn't hit the ground visibly.
It's a video shot by a phone, so shutter will speed up when pointing at the light. (in post: the image gets darker)
We need someone to shoot black video with a smartphone to get the right noise-signature :)

It's not shot with an app: just plain video that you can upload to youtube.

By "hoax UFO sighting video", do you mean the characters are trying to create some hoax footage? Or just a short film where two characters are filming and happen upon a UFO?

The latter is what will be seen in the video.
Whether it is a hoax or not is what triggers the whole community project :P

Let them imitate a wildlife TV show :P

'all this magnificent creatures... at night you never know what expect...'

Or it is just a recording of the UFO: they saw it and shot it.
After it few away they are yelling how bizarre that was...

Okay, these guys are out of water so they’re not pissing:

A car breaks down out in nowhere and they’re out of water. Going to get hot. Serious life threat.
One of them goes to climb up on the mountain to check if he can see a house somewhere.
The other one waits by the car. Is thirsty... as he sees a UFO. He shouts for his pal.
-You seeing that?
No answer.
He films the UFO. It comes closer so he freaks out and hides behind the car. The UFO gets closer and he doesn’t dare to look up or even film it.
A UFO door opens and loud party music can be heard.
He looks up from behind the car.
-Jack?!
His friend waves from the UFO with a cocktail glass.
-Hey! You coming or what?

any ideas that DONT involve urine? :)

Oh come on. Alcove hands you pure gold, and... =P

* * * * *

I like Alcove's.

But trying to think of one without urine...

This is tough. Especially the constraint that it be funny. I didn't realize the community project was going for the comedic. Anyway. Here's a try:

Sasquatch lumbers across the clear cut. The iphone tracks his progress.

Sasquatch stops in his tracks and looks up. he looks at the iphone operator and points off toward the distant sky.

Ron: (annoyed) Damn it, Earl...

Sasquatch/Earl: Look!

The iphone follows Earl's pointing finger and finds the flying saucer hovering just above the distant tree line.

Ron: Holy shi----

Sasquatch/Earl lumbers over to Ron. (The attempt at making a hoax Bigfoot video is all but forgotten.)

Earl: You gettin it?!

Ron: Oh yeahhhh!

There's a blast of sound like a giant tuba (you know, like in Spielbergs' War of the Worlds). Different colors light up and cycle around it.

The flying saucer starts to move slowly toward the two.

The camera shakes wildly as Ron and Earl apparently start to run while Ron attempts to keep the video on the saucer for a moment.

Ron and Earl both make vocalizations of alarm.

The video goes out.

Maybe we are looking in the wrong direction and try too hard to make it 'special' for something else than the main subject.

In essence we just need a UFO shot with a smartphone + some off screen comments.

I don't see the need for this "scene" to be any more than a shaky bit of camera phone footage.

But if you really want something more, how about having them trying to shoot some fake UFO footage, when a "real" one turns up....?

I've seen "Community project" on a lot of threads on here. What exactly does it mean?

maz - a number of forum members are trying to get a short film off the ground. NickClapper has written a script about a UFO sighting, which then follows several people across the globe. All the Community Project threads are related to this film.

Oh right. That sounds fun :) Is the script uploaded somewhere?

Okay, back to the size issue...

Here are five airplane fly overs on the way to the local airport.
I held the video camera in my right hand and the cell phone in my left.
Fortunately the sun was to my back, but that means it's reflecting off the view screen so I couldn't see sh!t most of the time.
I just aimed in the right direction until the plane flew past the trees.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF1ffHMgvXE

I've watched these a few dozen times so I can find the plane on the cell phone video - somewhat.
Obviously the degradation is significant, thus the size of any UFO needs to be... what quintupled the length of these aircraft?

Something about 500 - 800ft / 150 - 225m in width?

But likely you guys likely have better rez on your cell phone video cameras than I do.
(I have a armored POS because I'm real hard on my phones. I do a lot of physical activity.
Armored phone = cr@p cam.)

Whaddaya'll have on your iPhones and Galaxies?
iP5: 1080p HD video recording 30 fps. Ah, hail! That's wonderful.
G S4: 1080p@30fps. Perfect.

Alright, then.
Since the cell phone video standard is so high then I guess whomever is going to make this had better be fairly slick, because there isn't going to be any resolution downgrade to cover little non-perfects.

:)

There needs to be a reason why this video would go viral. A simple UFO shot could be done with AE, or whatever (as we're going to do). It needs something extra to go viral.

Off the top of my head, I think we should play off of stereotypes. Either the people in the video are a couple yokels, or they're a couple of stuffy city-folk.

By the way, has it been decided yet who is going to shoot this footage? Cuz it needs to be done SOON! If there isn't already someone in charge of this, I'll volunteer for it.
