comedy vs. drama?

Are comedies taken seriously at film festivals? I have always made short comedic films and i'm now considering attempting to enter a short into a film competition. Do i have a chance of taking home the prize with a comedy or should i attempt to switch gears and make a drama to have a better chance of gaining some recognition?

Yes, comedies can win prizes; "Creating Karma", a feature on which I did the audio post work, took the Best Feature award at the 2008 Broad Humor Film Festival and the By Women About Women award at the 2007 Brilliant Light International Film Festival of Los Angeles. The short "Hard Attack", on which I did the audio post, was a selected for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

There's a reason sitcoms work, and dramas are longer on TV. Yes, comedic shorts do well as fests.

You should make the film that you are passionate about. I have discovered over many years that making something just because you think it's what others want to see never really works out. Make your film, a film that is true to your vision with your aesthetic and it will find it's audience.
