Cheap tripod

So ya wanna get a cheap tripod, eh?

Here is an outcome of my short encounter with $60 tripod:

Originally had the whole scene to be shot on steadicam, but, for some unknown to me reason, my dumb a** decided to borrow a friend's cheap tripod and do a quick "rehearsal" with my t2i turned on, and placed on tripod.. as soon as I attached it, tripod's leg got caught in some wire, that one of the actor accidentally pulled and BAM! my t2i timbered down like a tree in Guatemala's rainforest.

Don't look like camera got damaged, did another 3 hrs of shooting with no incidents.. chipped the rim on the lens casing, but the rest seems to be fine as well..

Anyways. another expensive onset lesson learned - don't get a cheap tripod. Oh, and don't have s**tload of cables laying around..

tear.

PS i put the polarizer on it, just so nothing would be pressing on the damaged plastic, provoking any further damages.. .

damn that was stupid...

FWIW:

This is more the fault of the cabling than the tripod I imagine. Any tripod when tangled into cables that are in the path of people has the chance to fail. This is why we always strain relief any cables connected to camera if the camera is mounted someplace precarious like a ladder, dolly, or whatever.

And, not to be harsh, but cables should always be routed out of the way of the talent's feet.

Thanks guys.
But i was surpirsed that my t2i didn't break at all. For having a plastic casing, during the fall, i really thought it would shatter in thousand pieces... Not even a dent..

They're sturdy blighters.

That said the result would probably have den the same with a better tripod or even a thousand pound crane. If it falls over the camera is going to get hurt...

All the same, sorry for your loss...

It's a lesson in on-set safety. Some carpet runners laid over the cables after you've completed the set-up can prevent a lot of these problems. It also protects your cast and crew, and may even prevent a lawsuit.

An example of one of the thousands of stupid little details that go into a well thought-out production.

I've had good luck with DYNEX professional tripods from Best Buy or BestBuy.com. They are half the price of Manfrottos and they even come with a carrying case for the tripod. They have a hook for sandbags, a level, and independent leg movement.
