character Character help

I am trying to come up with some characters for a space exploration movie I've always wanted to do. I just wanted to get some thoughts on it. Does it sound better story wise and logically to have more military personel than scientists? It would be a small team of "explorers" all with different but similar backgrounds. I have the MC as a AirForce pilot who volunteers for teh mission but I need some scholars up there to give it some credibility-a fighter pilot wouldn't know jack about the harmful gases that might be in space or how close to fly to the sun etc.. Thanks in advance.

I think the movie Red Planet had a cool mix of character types.

An engineer\janitor
A soldier
A scientist
A poet\philosopher
An attractive strong woman
oh, and a "Red Shirt" (someone whose role is to die early on)

They had different jobs, as the necessity of space travel requires doubling\tripling up on duties.

just a place to start.. similar mixes are found in many group adventure type movies

I don't think military would be the best, since the military, is used mainly for fighting and combat really. What do they know about space, unless they were in the military previously, and then learned about space exploration. What planet or place are the they exploring?

Space exploration/programs have always been closely tied witht the military???

First develop your story and create the characters you need to tell your story. What is the role or purpose of each character? If you cannot answer that question, question if you really need that character.

That is the best way to answer your question.

Thanks guys for the advice. There's definitely going to be a deeper connection with the mc and why he wants to do the mission. Someone with fighting background has to be there in case any hostiles are encountered. They're not exploring a particular planet actually. They'd be the team that travels with aliens that arrived on earth back to a galactic community earth has yet to be a part of. It's an exploration mission but also diplomatuc. I'm trying to find the richest mix of characters that would keep initial plot holes to a minimum. I'm going to give my female character a duel role love interest and possibky scientist. I think i might write a unique character introduction scene to make backstories easy.

Stargate was an awesome movie. Kurt Russell knows what he's doing except when he's on a stargate southpark episode lol

Best isnt a word Id use here.

There is another school of thought on that. Character CAN drive story just as readily as story drives character. If you create a character that you like, then give him some internal conflict, then a story which brings that internal conflict out and makes it externally visible can flow forth.

That said, for this instance, I think MDMPLLC is right.. you have a story already, you want your characters to fit. Develop the story and populate it WITH ONLY people who need to be there.
