casting decisions, who to pick?

Let's say you audition 50 actors for a part. One actor is #1 for acting but middle of the pack in terms of looking the part. Another actor is top 3 in both looking the part and acting. Who would you cast?

I would cast me... but I might be a bit biased. ;)

Seriously though... how vital is "looking the part"?

Edit: Bring all the potentials back to a callback. Narrow the field down, and get to know them better. Also, you need to be comfortable with the actor.

Example, last year I was the reader for the auditions. The director loved one in particular... he nailed it in all regards... but tossed his HS into the trash the minute he left the room. The actor just couldn't stop talking non-stop, when off-camera. Yup, that gift of gab can be a curse. Too big a distraction for the director, so boom... gone.

Way too vague for any of us to answer your question.

Let's say that Tatum Channing is the perfect look for the role, but Paul Walker handles the material better. I'd go with Walker, but I wouldn't fault you for choosing Channing.

But what if you're faced with a situation in which Tatum Channing has the perfect look, but Morgan Freeman has auditioned for the role. Time for a major rewrite.

If Tatum Channing auditioned for me I'd ask him why he swapped his names around... :weird:
