Car Explosion

Is it necessary to have safety/fire crew when blowing up a car on a large private property. I am a very low budget filmmaker and their are many farms around which would be suitable when getting a land owners permission. Is it illegal without the right permission?

Cheers.

No idea, call some pyrotechs. No one on this forum would suggest you blow up a car without one on set.

You know, sometimes for practice firefighters will set a car a blaze just to put it out. They may just let you tape it from a safe distance. They may even be really excited about it if they know they are going to get a copy. I don't know what kind of condition the car would be in but maybe that is another option for you.

It might be better to do it via CGI, tbh.

Detonation Films is a great resource for all kinds of explosions, bullet hits, fires... pretty much anything that involves blowin' stuff up.

A lot of their hi-res footage is totally free. They also sell DVDs with a lot of extra stuff, and those are pretty cheap.

I think you'd be better off doin' this is in After Effects, than risking life & limb loading explosives into a vehicle that is soon to become shards of flying shrapnel.

Surely the car won't match, and firefighters are not trained/licensed to set explosives (except fireworks). They will set it on fire, and put it out.

Indietalk is right. Dont expect a giant explosion... The FD will light it and let it start burning well then put it out.

CG would probably be a better alternative, or a mix of the two. If you have the budget to burn up a car, you can probably get the CG done.... You can get some car explosion stock footage and replace the car with yours in 2D or 3D.

It only takes one trip to the hospital to take you out of the movie business for good.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will let you guys know how it turns out. I am still writing the script at the moment i'm just making sure everything I create can actually be done when it comes to filming.

Nah why would you use someone elses footage for your own film not to mention that the same explosion has probably been used in 100 other amateur flicks. Theres nothing like doing it for real but then you have to know what your doing, and if you do use CG don't use detonation films get someone to make an explosion in 3d studio max or maya.

Totally agree with Motorstorm here.... I can spot the that and the Action Movie Essentials stuff immediately. It's well done, but every kid with a computer and a handy cam uses it... But I do CG full time so I maybe a little biased.:P

Have a look at Particle Illusion. EXCELLENT program.

If you do go the CG route... I know a guy.

Call these two Australian companys and see if they can help find you a pyrotechnician. Whatever the rate is, remember, you only need him/her one day.

Not totally disagreeing with you, BUT, YOU might recognize it immediately, other people who make films might recognize it immediately, but will the average filmgoer recognize it... probably not, maybe 1 out of 1000.
