Can I use a book in a Short Film?

Hi,

I am producing a SAG Short Film and was wondering if we can legally mention a book (The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford) in our film?

Thanks to everyone out there.

I'd say yes. Mention it. I'm no entertainment lawyer...but it's probably safe. I've been in a lot of movies where books are seen in the BG...no one ever cares...we wouldn't showcase a magazine as freely...but a book should be fine.

Yes. We still have free speech. Logo's, photos, designs
are under copyright or trade mark which is why you
cannot show covers of DVD's, movie posters, products,
etc. in a movie. But if you are asking about characters
talking about a book and saying the title out loud, that's
fine.
