Camera-Mounted Boom Pole Setup

Hey guys!

Just wanted to share pics of a setup I put together recently.

Although a boom operator is generally the best bet, I don't always have access to one when it comes time to shoot. Plus, this run-n-gun setup really fits my current project's documentary style.

I was initially concerned with balance. Especially since the goal here was to get the microphone away from the camera by a significant amount. However, the weight of the camera/rig base keeps the whole works from trying to tilt forward. (Plus the arm and shotgun mic are pretty light.)

The setup was really easy. Just expanded one of the holes in the IndiFocus rig's bracket/handle part, and attached the boom arm to the top with a 3/8" screw. The Marantz PMD-660 audio recorder was attached with a screw, and the strap tied for extra security. ;)

Granted, it's not the most compact solution. But it's pretty freeing to have everything in one "package" for the times when it's just me doing the filming.

The set up looks sweet. Change of subject :) : Do you find pulling focus to be easy, with this set up?

Thanks, Murdock! Pulling focus has worked well so far. I mean... using the same setup prior to adding the boom, which shouldn't affect it. (btw, I'm using one of the follow focus setups w/ the snap gears by indiSystem.) The LCD viewfinder hood on back helps, in that it cuts out light plus offers magnification of the screen.

That said... I'm sure an external viewfinder would be easier on the eyes, and make low-angle shots MUCH more convenient. Heh.

That looks very nice.

Any more equipment and you'll need to move up to a fig rig.

Thanks! Now I know the upgrade path for when I add that external viewfinder.

...plus LED light. ...or whatever else.

The things you can do with sch 40 PVC. ;)
