Blood gushing out of throat effect?

Hey guys. So, we're getting ready to do this shoot and in this scene the main character get's his throat slashed by a make-shift knife. I was thinking about buying some blood packets and have the actor squeeze it as he holds his wound, so as to create a gushing effect as though blood is being pumped out of his throat.

However, before I spend a few bucks I was wondering, will this produce the desired effect? This will be in multiple shots with a make up designer. Will this look real enough or do we need something a little more special to make it look authentic?

Thanks in advance.

The blood pack method you mention can be very effective.
Another one is a blood tube on the knife itself. That's the
one I have used the most. It looks great.
