Basic Grammar Question

My girlfriend and I are having an argument about basic grammar question..

Here is a question:

"Is your family from New York?"

What would be the proper English to respond:
"Yes, we are" or "Yes, it is" ???

if the family is in the same room then it would be 'yes we are'

if not in the same room then 'yes they are'

but a simple yes or no would suffice. or 'yes, from the lower east side' or wherever.

if replied 'u know who i am?' then prob a tool not worth knowing.
