Audio question

Hey, brand new to filmmaking and to this forum. I recently picked up a dslr (t3i) and now am looking for recording equipment for a short i'm looking to make for a local film festival. I was looking at the tascam dr 40 as my recorder, so any suggestions on a mic and how much I should be looking to spend?

i recorded this using the tascam dr-40's built in microphones.
since youtube is mono, i just used one track and panned it to the center channel

Youtube is stereo ONLY and does not support mono! You can use one of the 2 channel matrixed surround sound formats and you can "fake" mono by panning all your material equally to the left and right channels (the phantom centre position). But there is no centre channel in stereo, a centre channel only exists (on youtube) when using say Dolby ProLogic. And of course, by definition, there is no panning in mono.

To the OP: Listen to Alcove's advice!

If the mic is phantom powered you'd probably need to be looking at extra battery packs or ways toextend battery life. Dies off quick when powering mics
