editing Anamorphic Ratios

I'm wondering if on my next project I should try and go with the whole cinema look with anamorphic ratios (I'm not even sure if I'm using those words in the right place). For example taking a 1920x1080 shot and cropping it to a 1920x810. I took some test footage around my house.

Quality looks degraded because of render settings and I couldn't be assed to re-render a test footage, but what do you guys think?

PS. No Vimeo bb-codes? :(

"Anamorphic" refers to a lens type or the way the image is recorded to create the eventual aspect ratio.

The original, as in 35mm theatrical film, Anamorphic was for using the entire 35mm film frame, which is 4:3/1.33 to 1 aspect ratio, but distorting the image with the lens to the frame where everything was tall and thin. When presented on the big screen with a projector, they would put on an anamorphic lens, and the image would then be screened at 2.35 to 1. This was called CINEMASCOPE, or as it was shortened - just "scope".

You may want to refer to what your writing about as ASPECT RATIO, as that is more accurate.

The wider aspect ratio tends to be used for more "epic" stories. It's really only effective on big screens, as in MOVIE THEATER screens. Even on the biggest TV's it tends to lose impact since it isn't full screen.

If you're framing needs that really wide screen aspect ratio and all your composition tend to look better (think of a lot of THREE SHOTS, etc.) then I say go for it.
