Agent

Hello

I am in the early stages of my directing career and was wondering if it is important to get myself an agent, to find work. Feedback welcome.

Thanks

Not at all.

Having an agent at your early stage might even be a hindrance.
Agents only get paid if you get paid so they tend to turn down low
paying jobs. Now if you are being offered several good paying jobs
a year and need an agent to field offers and get the best deal,
then it's importand.

If you are not currently in demand, but a building your experience
it is a good idea to direct pretty much anything you are offered.
Even if it’s a music video for expenses only or a short film for
no pay at all. An agent will discourage that.

And with only one short film completed, you aren’t currently a
client that is attractive to most agents. Or do you have a lot of
offers?

Hi thanks for the advice

You are right i have only done one short film, in the process of shooting a music video. I am
looking to do as much work as possible. I thought an agent would help, but not yet at that stage,
one day perhaps;)

It's a common misunderstanding.

An agent fields offers and negotiates the deal. They
do not find work for a client. Especially a new client
with no track record. One day you will need one. Until
you have several offers a month coming in you will
have to find your own gigs.
