Advice for a props rig

Hi,

We need advice on how to achieve a props rig for our film, Paint Me Free. The rig is only used for about 30 seconds at the end of the film:

-Actor is sitting on a bed beside a painting easel
-The painting easel has about 100 easel papers on it
-The actor pulls the clamp on top of the easel holding the papers to the easel
-The papers fall to the ground one by one

The papers should fall fast enough so that if one looked at the easel as they were falling, it would look like an animation. This is akin to a large flip book.

We know that we can do it through stop-motion, but we are interested in having the actor in the shot and a push into the frame with both the actor and the easel.

Also, if we were to do it in panels, we would have to do the pan in with a precise mechanized device with the actor and the easel separately. There isn't enough in the budget to afford one of these devices.

We need each paper to fall individually at around 12-15 frames per second.

What we need to know:

We need to have these papers fall at a reasonable rate, one at a time. We are interested in moving in a direction away from separate panels, and stop-motion. We will use those as a last resort.

If you know of any way that we can rig it so that these papers fall, let us know. Also if you need to see the storyboard to get a better understanding, I can email you those.

Note: We only need about 100 - 200 frames on the easel, the rest of the animation (about 300 more frames) will be done in post. We will achieve this through the push into the easel, because eventually when the actor leaves the screen and the papers take up the frame, we can switch to the post-production version.

Thanks.

how about an old wire spool (large) on some rack with a crank.. picture a music box sound barrel, attach fishing line to each of the pages, as the spool is cranked the pages are pulled off the easel. Because they lines are attached at different places along the circumference of the spool, they come of at different times faster\slower depends on crank speed.. slack in the line is your frame hold time.. Let me know if you want me to sketch out a plan..

Could be done in post with green screen on the easel, paper path..

Thanks

In visualizing the above idea, occurred to me that just a regular old fishing real will work, with a SINGLE line.
  • Layout the drawings on the floor in sequence. top to bottom. First frame at the TOP, last frame nearest the fishing real..
  • Space them out with one complete page worth of empty space between them
  • double check the sequence before going on..
  • flip em over on to their faces, back side up.
  • String out some fishing line from the real, and lay it along the backs of the entire sequence of pages.
  • tape the line to the BOTTOM ONLY of each "drawing"
  • Flip them back right side up
  • stack up the pictures.. (first frame on top)

at this point you should have a stack of pictures, with some fishing line sandwiched between each layer, attached to the back bottom of each picture.

  • Real them in!

as you real in, the first picture falls, and lands on the ground, the fishing line invisible and below the subject anyway, you wait a second, then real in the next one, pausing as long as you like for each "frame"

  • have some one, out of frame, peel of the pictures from the line, so you can real in the next one.. else you'll have to stand WAY away leaving enough line between the easel and the fishing real to allow for the entire sequence to be stretched out (this might be preferable as you can redo the sequence a few times by just re stacking the pictures.. )

The gap allows for each paper to fall off and and clear the easel, showing the entire next picture for as long as you don't real.. so your reeling in speed is more like bringing in a fish.. real, hold, real, hold, real, hold..

The gap might be longer to assure that the page completely falls to the floor before continuing.. Note that you will have to keep the falling pictures out of the frame as they will be pulled across the floor.. might be a cool gag (the pictures sliding out, down the stairs etc. ) , but not what your looking for..

You could rig it so that the pictures are automatically separated from the line, maybe pass the line through a small eye hook screwed into he floor.. with low tack tape, could work..

Need a pic?

a complete alternative .. no rig required..

depending on emotion, can you have the artist.. RIP OFF each drawing in order.. could be a powerful moment.. ripping, tearing faster and faster until it looks like animation..
