Can anybody give me some pointers or point me in the right direction to a good tutorial on the basics of adobe after effects. it would be greatly apprectiated

video copilot is good for learning the basics and getting used to the interface, this one specifically http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/after_effects_101/ and andrew is really good at explaining things, but a lot of people who learn from that site tend to do the exact same effects. there are lots of other tutorials as well (depending on what you want to create, some of these are may be a bit more advanced/2d animation based) also trying searching vimeo and youtube.
