Acting class?

I've been told that taking an acting class will greatly improve my directing skills and will make me have a better understanding of what it is to be an actor hence having a better work relationship with them while on set.

What do you guys think of this? Have you done it, does it actually work? Thanks! :)

You're in LA - there's even "Acting for Directors" classes to choose from.

I think they're useful. They are designed to be more of a crash-course than ongoing. You'll get as much out as you put in.

.

Absolutely take acting classes. I would say take as many as you can. Before I wanted to direct I did acting classes for a year and half. It gave me a great perspective on the challenges of acting.

Also it can be a lot of fun. Some of the acting classes that I took had a special energy that was very enjoyable but challenging to explain.

I've taken Judith Weston's Acting for Directors workshop.
I've also taken a number of acting classes & done a bunch of theatre.

I can't say enough about Judith's workshop. I came out of that course very confident in my ability to communicate my needs to the actors, using a language they understand. A few folks have balked at the price of her 3-day class, complaining that they'd rather buy a camera with that money. But if you want to make an investment in yourself, I suggest you look into this class. For me, it was an empowering game-changer.

Regards,

Thomas
