50mm f 1.8 prime lens or røde mic for canon t3i?

Hello! I've now had my canon t3i for over a year and I'm now planning to buy my first real accessory for it. I'm either going to buy a røde videomic or a 50mm f 1.8 prime lens which both have about the same price. What would you guys say is the more essential filmmaking tool of the two?
Thanks in advance!

Impossible to say without more info.

What lens do you currently have?
What sort of film making do you do ? narrative? weddings?

Even with a mic if you're plugging it directly into the camera it's not going to be great.

what lens are you using right now?

I'm assuming they're using the 18-55 kit lens, since that's what comes with the camera in the box, and if they didn't have that, then they wouldn't be shooting with anything, because that assumes they only bought the camera body.

A 50mm 1.8 prime lens is a great investment. I bought the same one. And for that T3i, you can't go wrong with having it.

Although, if you definitely want to start shooting something with sound with regards to that camera, then you probably should go for the Rode mic, no matter what model it is. Anything is better than the internal mic on the T3i. It is total garbage.

I moved up to the Panasonic GH4 last year, and the internal mic on that camera is far superior and pics up sound far far better. It isn't sound you'd want to officially use, as it's still very crushed and it peaks out easily, but at least it isn't as tinny or as soft as the T3i is. You can also hear stuff almost in 360 degrees with the built in mic on the GH4. So for run and gun purposes, you probably don't "need" to get a mic right away with it.

But for a T3i. Yes, absolutely, I would go with the Rode mic as your next purchase. The 50mm can wait for a bit longer.

Thanks for answering, currently I only have the 18-55mm kit lens. I mostly do docu-style work and a little bit of narrative stuff on the side.

To add to sfoster's questions, I would also ask: which rode video mic?
I would not be able to afford the videomic pro, so i would go for the original videomic or the videomic go which seems to have about the same audio quality with a cheaper price, although you lose out on any manual control att all.

Thanks for the help! Since I'm going to do a lot of docu-style stuff I'm probably gonna go with the videomic!

Yeah, like FilmmakerJ, I'd say get the mic. If you can, also get this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-Portab...e=UTF8&qid=1437902221&sr=8-1&keywords=zoom+h1

So you have something to record into. The quality will be pretty decent.

And if you can't afford it, then just make sure that you install magic lantern into your T3i. Magic Lantern will get rid of the artificially induced audio gain in the recorder of your T3i, and your camera will then record audio much better.

Thanks, I will get a recorder as soon as I can, allthough i can't afford it right now. Luckily I've already got magic lantern installed!

Maybe it is the best choice for you. Especially if you need it now.

Like you, I've been considering the purchase of one of these mics.

However, I've decided I won't get one of the cheaper mics based upon the first two reviews below. I'd rather wait and spend the $100 more for the better VideoMic Pro when I can. But then I don't need it right away. I can wait, for better or for worse.

A continuous hiss or fluttering sound? And the "design flaw" when it comes to adjusting the gain on the rycote model? Not for me.

Then again, the first reviewer does say that connecting it to a separate audio recorder is a way around the hissing problem, or that you can remove it in post.

Also, I don't think the following reviewers mention any such problems with these mics, and are in fact, more-or-less glowing reviews.

Best of luck!

Yeah, it might be smarter to spend a little more money and get the more expensive one... I'll have to consider that. Thanks for sharing the videos
