Thoughts on how my villains are portrayed?

The mechanics of the gang will have as much to do with how it is accepted as how they look. If they dress like frat boys and are selling coke in New York City, that wont work particularly well. If they dress like frat boys and they are selling ecstasy and steroids on a college campus you have...

    New Ideas (All Are Welcome!)

“I need someone to protect me from all the measures they take in order to protect me. ” ― Banksy That makes for an interesting PSA.

Which will make my character stronger?

I think the villain may need more work than the detective. I'm not an expert on autism, but in my experience and to the best of my understanding, being aware of the degree of social disconnect from neurotypicals would be unlikely. The implied anger would be a real reach. If you're looking to...

Thoughts on this idea for a short ~ "Everybody Dies"

That is quite a bit to roll into a short. Overall I like it. I think the title could use some work. I'm also curious why this guy wants to live forever. I've never met anyone that has led me to belive they would want such a thing. Contrary to NickClapper I think a lack of feeling will be...

The Lights! The Crowds! The White Sheets...

I've been all over the spectrum. I did the Short Film Corner in Cannes, tiny festivals, and some of the mid-tear stuff like the Big Apple Film Festival. I love anyone showing my film to a crowd of any size. I'd say, stick around and meet some people, you might be surprised by who is in...

What editing equioment will $1500 buy ?

That will depend on the project and what you are doing with it. In my case I hired an editor (my producer did actually) then I spent a year or so switching back and forth between the festival circuit and writing. Now I have another project starting up and I'll do it all over again.

    Not sure about screenplay idea

Media is REALLY hard to write. I'm doing a feature right now with a reporter as a main character and it's a pain in the ass trying to develop a personality for a character that spends most of his time asking other people questions. It would be really easy to end up with a passive protagonist...

What editing equioment will $1500 buy ?

Personally, I'd hire an editor for that amount. Maybe a low end power/mac book and either final cut studio 2 or express 4. A better idea might be an older avid box, but I guess it all boils down to your level. Do you know your stuff when it comes to editing? Are you still learning the...

What books are on your shelf?

That sounds worse than the flood ;). I just pointed it out as something to consider as you rebuild your collection. Though there seems to be a generation gap to it. And I was in Cannes this year, trust me, a trans-Atlantic phone call is an expensive event.

What books are on your shelf?

That really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. After 1 bout with flood damage, and a few moves I switched to a kindle. You can redownload your books for free if you lose it. It's also much easier to pick up a kindle with 800 books than a bookshelf. If you are anywhere near a flood plain I highly...

What books are on your shelf?

My shelf is pretty eclectic. I provided links where possible. I've got pulitzer prize winners like The Road, Confederacy of Dunces, and the Brief and Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao on the same shelf as pulp stuff like early Chesbro novels, and Graphic novels (Bone, Watchmen, early TMNT stuff)...

    STORYBOARDS 4 CHEAP IN NY!!!

I'm going to write another short in the next few days. If I get it done in any semblance of a final stage before you leave I'll throw you the work. I'll email you if I finish in time, or PM me your contact info if a call would be better.

    Directors style

It's worth noting that the director gets credit for a lot of "style" created by other people. Some of that is due and some is not. For example my favorite Cinematographer Bob Richardson is famous for his hard lighting, but only if you pay attention to Cinematographers. To the average person...

Overusing words in action lines - "look" "sit"

You don't have an example, so you want the guy who disagrees with you to come up with one? I don't think a good example really exists. Half of the adverbs I see in scripts suppliment poor word choice. The others describe emotions that verbs don't have. My characters don't run quickly, they...

Overusing words in action lines - "look" "sit"

Your Hollywood dream won't die, but that doesn't make a bad habbit a good one. Look at it this way. I bite my nails when I get nervous. If I bite my nails during a pitch there's a good chance it wont make or break the pitch let alone my carreer. It absolutely won't help and it isn't good...

Overusing words in action lines - "look" "sit"

I think my last 4 or 5 posts should articulat that I have thought about it. Which brings me back to my question. If you have a verb that describes the action you are trying to describe, what does the adverb contribute?

    loglines wtf

Because knowing what something is about and knowing how it unfolds are 2 different things. What criteria do you use to select a movie when you go to the theater? Does anyone go to a theater and just plop down $12 for whatever starts next? Exactly, it implies familiarity. That doens't mean you...

Any Directors wanna share their experiences?

This is gospel. I would suggest getting someone other than the DP to handle the lights just to save time on set. If your DP is swapping out lenses, moving the camera, tweaking the focus, you can have someone else re-work the lights and cut your time in half. On a small scale I'd say a camera...

    loglines wtf

Turn on your TV. Pick any movie. Hit the info button on your remote. You'll get either a log line or a brief synopsis. This is how people decide what they want to watch. People don't watch things unless they know what it's about in advance. That's why trailers, log lines, posters, and title...

    Modern Western Film, Outlaw Style

For treasure I'd personally use a MacGuffin. People hate MacGuffin's but they can't stop talking about them. Their value grows infinitely in the viewers mind. I think the western is more about the lone "hero" than the outlaw. He can be an outlaw, but standing on his own particularly against...
