movies How to Sell my Shorts and Features on My Site per Download?

The fact is that the general public (after family and friends), will not go to your private website, therefore they will not buy your film. Are you famous? Why would they go to your website? In reality, you need to have someone else sell your film...if they can. You need to first have your...

    The Pact | Short Film

When you do your next project, be careful how you mic your dialogue. You need to get your microphone(s) as close to the actors as possible. You can do this by using a boom pole with a microphone attached to it, or investing in a set of wireless lav mics which can be hidden in the actors'...

    campaign Suspense, Surprises, Sassy!

For EL MARACHI, Robert Rodriguez spent $7,200.00 (Yes $7200) shooting the film. Columbia picked it up and spent $200,000 on post production, and then an estimated million dollars on marketing. The film was the cheapest movie to gross over a million dollars....it made $2 million actually.

misc I thought DVDs were dead

I fully agree with you. I've had most of my films distributed on VHS or DVD since 1989, and most of the companies screwed me over in one fashion or another...the end result being that I rarely, if ever, received royalty checks. We did our best business with Amazon, but they stopped...

misc I thought DVDs were dead

We just received an email from our distributor, FILMHUB, stating that they want to distribute one of our films, DEATH IN HOLLYWOOD on DVD. (It's already being streamed on numerous sites). But Filmhub wants $700 to author it...we passed.

    CLOSED CAPTIONS

I have been using a free program from AEGISUB.ORG with excellent results. If I have a long project that needs captions I upload it to REV.COM and they usually finish the job in a few hours for $1.50/minute. (A 10 minute show is 10x$1.50)

location-sound Best budget mic for recording actors in the open?

I used a Comica BoomX-U U2 on our last film. This model of Comica includes lav mics rather than a shotgun. The one advantage of using lav mics is that you do not need a second audio person with a fishpole, and you can shoot the actors in distant wide shots without having a mic in the shot...

misc Can a filmmaker with the right passion make films with virtually no budget?

You're right! We made FART-THE MOVIE in 1991. It was released by 4 companies on VHS/DVD, and is currently on 19 streaming channels. We're still cashing checks after all these years...

misc Can a filmmaker with the right passion make films with virtually no budget?

At the end of the day it's all about the script and characters. This is especially evident in 1-location sitcoms such as ALL IN THE FAMILY, SANFORD AND SON, TAXI, CHEERS, BOB NEWHART, ROSANNE, DICK VAN DYKE, etc etc...

misc Can a filmmaker with the right passion make films with virtually no budget?

I agree that shooting on location looks great and adds production value to your film. But if you are shooting ANYWHERE on public property, a shooting permit is required by law. If you are willing to run the risk of getting ticketed for filming without a permit, arrested for trespassing, or...

misc Can a filmmaker with the right passion make films with virtually no budget?

My wife and I have been making low/no budget films as a hobby for several years, including several low budget feature films. The trick is to write a script which allows you to shoot on your own property, and includes props that you already have on hand. We constructed quite a few sets in our...

film-school Can going to film school make a aspiring filmmaker successful?

Film school introduces you to the filmmaker's toolbox, and how to use those tools. It also teaches you what the "rules" are, so that you can either abide by those rules, or creatively break those rules. Also, in film school, if there are 12 people in your class, you will be working as a crew...

film-school To film school or not to film school, that is the question.

If you paint, it's because you enjoy it, and it is something personal to you . Unless you're a GREAT painter, NOBODY WILL BUY IT. If you write a book, it is also something personal to you. Some people will read it. Most will not. FEW WILL BUY IT. If you make a film, it's like writing a book or...
