I need a push to start my career. Help?

I agree. Imagine you had a great script, actors, passion... but just a cheap camera. You'd learn a lot by just getting out there... and if the project was really good, you could reshoot later. Once you'd made the right cuts, found out what works, got a soundscape, script changes and music...

For every Kevin Smith there must be a thousand Kevin Jones'- who've gone that route and nosedived. Tough times.

    It's tax time

I heard pre-tax time was a good period to go round asking companies to invest in film, so they could write part of it off. Is this true? Am I late? I have a couple of people I could bug.

Yup, the more you work on the project the more it gains a kind of magnetism. I accept that what I've posted in the screening room so far has been mediocre at best. I'm new to this biz. But I'm quickly learning the technical side thanks to this forum. I should have a new version out in a couple...

editing Anyone got good results with Argeiphontes Lyre?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtioauIIjfo This is kind of interesting. It's nothing amazing, but I think it's a program that has unlocked potential if you hit it from the right angle. It also looks like a good program to generate abstract looking 'filler' which I might need from time to...

editing Anyone got good results with Argeiphontes Lyre?

Was given a Mac today from someone who believed in my project. Wooo hooo! I heard a lot of good things about this program but my own personal results were half-assed, even when I spent ages. I'm going to give it another go. I just wondered if anyone else had success with this...

Give me bullet points for a great demo reel, please?

Don't neglect the audio. Spend a day or so on Freesound.org or somewhere building up a soundscape...

Thanks Indiebudget, I'm a big Handbrake fan. One day I hope I can compress without the interface. I'm always looking for good drum machines too... someone gave me a mac the other day so I'll get it for OSX.

He said characters, not actors. Get yourself a fake beard and some hair dye and you're set.

"From the producers of the critically acclaimed US SINNERS" - cuts to the chase quicker, in one title... Some B-Roll / outside shots of NYC might add something.

I think the intro's too long and you need to cut straight to the interviews. I'd put put the prettier girls in first. 20 seconds is a long time to wait to get to the meat. The music at the start doesn't add anything... I'd scrap it or change it. I wouldn't give any money solely on that but I...

Thanks for those additions yall. Indietalk is the head janitor around here, you'll have to ask him. I'm new to film but I made a couple of useful threads for newbs. 'Youtube Film School' is the other one. Between those two threads, you could get a start in film for next to nothing. If they...

Ideas for a locked-room mystery genre..

Haha that's a *great* idea for a short. Really out of the box... I'm rarely inspired by shorts but that really grabbed me.

Ideas for a locked-room mystery genre..

Pretty basic but might stimulate some concrete ideas: http://www.howtodothings.com/hobbies/a4281-how-to-write-a-detective-story.html * Starting with the end scene seems like good advice. Working a lot on the detective's character might be a good starting off point.
