lighting anybody tried the external LED lights for DSLRs?

I've used LED lights and I like them. I mainly do interviews, and these work well for that purpose. They don't light up a scene as do the incandescent lights, but for what I do they work well. I've used the 500 and 160 led lights. I've also supplemented natural light from a window...

Shotgun mic vs boom vs lavalier/lapel mic

Wired lavs are your cheapest option if you are just shooting low budget. I've used cheap wired lavs and paid less that $50 for them. They are self powered and have a mini-jack, so they will work with any consumer camcorder that takes an external mic. Another option is to record on a portable...

Shotgun mic vs boom vs lavalier/lapel mic

Good subject to explore. I do a lot of interviewing. I usually use lav mics, wired. They are cheap, low or no interference, decent to excellent sound. HOWEVER, I have run into lots of problems; the mics are almost always visible (less of a problem with interviews, since everyone expects to...

    Craigslist Crew (First timer)

Pizza and doughnuts have been pretty much the only thing provided on the short films I've worked on. Would have liked a great meal, but there wasn't much time. They wanted to get things over with.

    Dear Newbies

Interesting post. In my scriptwriting class, we read the first 12 pages of the 'Seven' script (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman). We then watched the film. I asked the class if they would have bought the film based on the first 12 pages, not knowing anything else about the project. No one said...

Spider, short film from down under

Let me be clear...I had nothing to do with this film! (I wish I had...) My scriptwriting teacher wanted us to watch a short posted on YouTube called Spider. (Search on Spider short film. Otherwise, lots of Spiderman stuff comes up). The premise is that a pretty woman is very, very angry...

    'Hiring' actors/actresses-need some help

I'm glad the OP is interested in finding real actors/actresses instead of casting friends and acquaintances for his film. I have worked on several films with great promise, only to have them fail at crucial points because of poor acting. We had several local theater company actors, and they...

    Oscar Nominated Shorts

My wife and I attended a program of the Oscar-nominated live action and animated shorts. These films are the top of the heap, obviously, and the indie filmmaker can learn a lot about short films by watching these. Every one of them was good. It's too bad that even these films don't get the...

    Meeting Philip Bloom Friday

Ask about the AF 100, if you want. He's done some great stuff on that newish camcorder.

    Need cheap monitor

Lilliput on ebay. They're cheap and should do the trick. Or just check out cheap Chinese monitors on ebay. Don't know the quality but may work.

    Need field monitor for interviewing

I do have a laptop and a netbook. I could use either, I guess, though I would probably want to use the battery for portable monitoring.

    Premade "boom poles"

I've tried the painter's pole route and most of them are pretty sloppy and noisy. The aluminum boom poles aren't that expensive if you forgo the internal cables. You can find adapters that will go from the painter pole thread to a mic thread on ebay.

    Need new camcorder

FWIW, I've purchased the Panasonic HVX 200, together with a couple of P2 cards.

    Need field monitor for interviewing

I do a fair amount of interviewing on camera. 0ne problem I face is that I use the flip-out LCD screen to check everything is going well. That means the interviewee is staring at the camera, since he is looking at me. I don't like that. I like the interview shots where the subject is looking...

Upgrading to an HD camera. Suggestions?

The Panasonic AF100 is out of the price range. It's $4750, without a lens. I'd love to have one, but I do need to eat at least once in a while. Like to OP, I don't like the DSLR, as I shoot interviews, and I'm not going to stop when the chip overheats. I can run for an hour on miniDV.

    What camcorder should I buy?

My little Canon ZR960 has an external mic. It's the bottom of the line, but it works fine for youtube type interviews. It's a miniDV, and I've had a lot of fun using it. It goes with me lots of places to shoot locations for future reference.

Need to shoot black crows at midnight

Well, Mr. Funk, I'm not Ken Burns! Wish I was, wish I had his resources!. Video is definitely the right way to go. Found that the Sony HVR-1000u Digital has super nightshot. I'm investigating whether this will shoot at 25 feet or so, with additional illumination. That is definitely the...

Need to shoot black crows at midnight

I tried my Canon and I got...nothing. The ambient light is poor. The night sky is very dark, and, of course, crows are black. There is, of course, a solution. I just have to decide how much to pay to get that solution. Video will work. We have all seen night vision shots. It's going to...
