Alfred Molina just gave Spidey fans something to look forward to when the latest installment in Sony’s Marvel franchise, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” hits theaters on December 17. In a new interview with Variety, the actor confirmed, after much fan speculation, that he’s returning to the series to reprise the role of Otto Octavius, a.k.a. Doc Ock, that he originated in 2004’s “Spider-Man 2,” directed by Sam Raimi. But, there’s a catch: This time, in Jon Watts’ film, the actor will be de-aged. “It was very interesting going back after 17 years to play the same role, given that in the intervening years, I now have two chins, a wattle, crow’s feet and a slightly dodgy lower back,” Molina said, explaining why he asked director Jon Watts how...
Darius Marder’s experimental “Sound of Metal” — the Oscar favorite for Best Sound — was surprisingly snubbed at the 68th annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards for sound editing on Friday, but it rebounded on Saturday to take sound mixing honors at the 57th annual CAS Awards. The sound editors presented a three-way split between Aaron Sorkin’s multi-layered courtroom drama, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (dialogue/ADR), “Greyhound,” the World War II battleship action/adventure (effects/foley), which is an Oscar sound nominee, and Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (underscore). Pixar’s “Soul,” which took the Golden Reel for animation, is also in the sound Oscar race. The other Oscar nominees — “Mank” and “News of the World” — were also...
Page Six has learned that John Corbett, also known as furniture designer and Carrie Bradshaw’s doting ex Aidan Shaw, will be a recurring player in the upcoming reboot of “Sex and the City” on HBO Max. The actor featured majorly in Seasons Three and Four of the original series and bizarrely in the 2010 sequel movie “Sex and the City 2” during The Girls’ poorly conceived jaunt to Abu Dhabi. While HBO hasn’t confirmed Corbett’s casting, the actor said, “I’m going to do the show.” Corbett isn’t sure how many episodes of the upcoming 10 he will star in, but he did say, “I think I might be in quite a few,” adding, “I like all those people, they’ve been very nice to me.” What exactly “Sex and the City” will look like circa 2021 is starting...
On Saturday morning, first-time Oscar producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Jesse Collins gave an L.A. press conference to fill in the gaps on the looming Oscar show. Details have been coming thick and fast in the past week as plans solidified, and nominees and their guests make their travel arrangements for the two-month-delayed Academy Awards (televised live on April 25 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide). Oscars 2021 could not have been accomplished without the delay, the producers said, from safety concerns to increased access to vaccinations. Their goal: to stage a zoom-less affair packed (at a safe distance) with as many live human nominees and presenters (each allowed...
With just eight days to go before the Academy Awards, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” took the top prize at the ACE Eddie Awards, winning Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic), for acclaimed editor Alan Baumgartner. Matthew Friedman and Andrew Dickler won Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) for “Palm Springs,” which did not receive any nominations for the 93rd Oscars, unlike “The Trial of the Chicago 7” with its six. But in two other categories, the likely Oscar winners gained steam: “Soul” won Best Edited Animated Feature Film and “My Octopus Teacher” Best Edited Documentary (Feature), solidifying both of those films as the frontrunners in the Oscars’ Animated Feature and Documentary Feature categories. On the TV front, “Schitt’s Creek,”...
Pixar’s “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s “Wolfwalkers” swept ASIFA-Hollywood’s 48th Annie Awards Friday night, with the former grabbing seven animated feature awards and the latter capturing five (plus the sponsored prize for “There’s a Monster in My Kitchen”). The Black-led, existential fantasy “Soul” took best feature, writing (Pete Docter, Mike Jones, Kemp Powers), music (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste), character animation, FX, storyboarding, and editorial. The hand-drawn Irish folk tale “Wolfwalkers” (co-produced by Apple Original Films) countered with best indie feature, direction (Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart), production design, character design, and voice acting (Eva Whittaker as Mebh). Before sweeping the Golden Globes...
The family sports drama is familiar territory, especially for the House of Mouse. The studio has crafted all manner of acerbic coaches and ragtag teams needing to be whipped into shape. But none of those past incarnations had John Stamos, America’s favorite rebel uncle, at the helm. And it is Stamos’ presence that makes the series charming, sweet, and more enjoyable than it has any right to be — especially considering how horrible his character starts out. Stamos plays Marvyn Korn, a former coach for the NCAA who was benched for being the guy throwing chairs and berating referees. He’s given a foot back in the door by coaching the girls basketball team at the elite La Jolla prep school, Westbrook School for Girls. Almost immediately...
It’s the middle of April and we’ve finally reached the end of the so-called winter TV awards season. On Thursday, April 22 the Film Independent Spirit Awards will honor its first ever batch of TV winners and simultaneously send the industry full-speed ahead into Emmy season. These final days have seen a flurry of awards ceremonies, with the Art Directors Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards, Costume Designers Guild Awards, and Casting Society’s Artios Awards all being dispensed in the past week, with the Annie Awards, ACE Eddie Awards, and American Society of Cinematographers Awards — as well as the aforementioned Independent Spirit Awards — yet to come. Here’s what the TV awards landscape looks like currently and what to expect next...
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Mythic Quest” Season 1, Episode 11, “Everlight.”] When the Apple TV+ comedy “Mythic Quest” debuted its “Quarantine” episode in late May of last year, Rob McElhenney’s sweet ode to caring co-workers hit at the right time, with the right notes. Zany virtual bets and inventive Zoom experiments made the half-hour a joyful reprieve, just like much of the show that preceded it. But two months into stay-at-home orders, Poppy Li’s struggles with social isolation — and her co-creative director Ian’s recognition of her deteriorating morale — gave the episode an extra emotional wallop. Not only did anxious audiences need the kind of respite good comedy can provide, but they needed...
The arc of the moral universe may bend toward justice, but it needs a little boost here and there. In the case of Black LGBTQ media, a few watershed moments shot through the culture more like a geyser than a sprinkling of incremental change: When “Orange Is The New Black” introduced the force that is Laverne Cox, when “Moonlight” won Best Picture, and when “Pose” premiered on FX. Heading into its third and final season next month, the New York City ballroom scene drama — set in the late 1980s to early ‘90s — broke records from the jump. Its 2018 premiere marked the most transgender performers as series regulars in scripted television history, and they were all of Black or Latinx descent. “‘Pose’ was a game-changer. Centering trans...
Reactions are incoming from friends and colleagues about Helen McCrory, the “Harry Potter” and “Peaky Blinders” actress who died on Friday from cancer at the age of 52. Steven Knight, creator of “Peaky Blinders,” released a statement: “Helen was one of the great actors of her generation. She was so powerful and controlled and this is so sad.” McCrory played Aunt Polly on the series, which announced this year that would it be ending with Season 6. “Peaky Blinders” star Cillian Murphy said, “I am broken-hearted to lose such a dear friend. Helen was a beautiful, caring, funny, compassionate human being. She was also a gifted actor — fearless and magnificent. She elevated and made humane every scene, every character she played. It was a...
Disney-owned 20th Century and original “Predator” screenwriters John and Jay Thomas are preparing for a legal battle over the rights to the 34-year-old science-fiction horror franchise, which includes four movies and the “Alien vs. Predator” mash-up project. The Thomas brothers wrote the screenplays for 1987’s “Predator,” directed by John McTiernan and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and its 1990 sequel “Predator 2.” The brothers have filed a lawsuit against Disney to recapture the rights to the “Predator” franchise, prompting Disney to file its own lawsuit against the brothers to retain the rights. According to The Hollywood Reporter: “The Thomas brothers are seeking to exploit copyright law’s termination provision, which allows...
Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic. It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,”...
