Jean-Luc Godard is one of the founders of the "French New Wave" which began in the sixties. He also wrote for the legendary French film magazine "Cahiers Du Cinema". He changed filmmaking forever by breaking every rule he could. He incorporated jump cuts, shaky handheld cameras, and he also broke the 4th rule (looking into the camera and speaking to the audience in "Pierrot Le Fou") in his work.
His work is filled with razor sharp dialogue. Some of the best dialogue ever written.....
If you want to become familiar with him, I suggest checking out "Band of Outsiders" first. After that, "Breathless". If you like that you can check out his other hits, like "Contempt", and Pierrot Le Fou (hated that movie, it was too artsy for me.)
but I urge you to put both "Breathless" and "Band of Outsiders" on your netflix queue lineup!
