I love the way they substitute cymbals for waves at the beginning. By the way, this clip would be a lot less suspenseful without the music. : )

I would say music should be one of the first steps. Sometimes the music is so quiet that it is barely there. You can feel the viewer lean forward to hear/see better. When the music stops abruptly, suspense builds before it starts again, too. Check out the beginning of the animation "Bunneh"...
