Have any of you actually had any luck with this at all? I am noticing that all the so-called "emerging filmmaker" grants seem to be very specifically earmarked for very select groups of people- documentary projects, formal film school students, Africa, & Latina women seem to be the latest fads...

Maybe you could hunt for companies that take an interest in the specific issue your story addresses, e.g., an environmental group, a women's group, a tolerance/peace group, etc. I have heard of a lot of places giving out grants to films about social consciousness themes; unfortunately, though...

Definitely, one step at a time! I am from Connecticut; and our state's film commission website is not so great. Apparently, they dole out grants to different types of artists categorized by field on certain odd- or even-numbered years, and give out most of that money to poets and photographers...
