The Power Rangers... what a totally schizophrenic movie.

This was a CHILDRENS television show... the movie opens with a joke about a character accidentally "milking" a male cow instead of a female one.

Elizabeth Banks... was CREEPY AS HELL. This is the stuff nightmares are made out of.
Little kids can't watch this movie.

Then the last act of the film suddenly becomes whimsical like it was intended for children.

I like elizabeth banks and overall I personally enjoyed this film - the ending was not at all satisfying for me - but I have to wonder WTH the creators were thinking. This is a powerful example of how important it is to know your audience.
 
Ya I guess they're trying to get kids today & people who were kid fans of it many years ago. I saw some clips that seemed real cheesy.

Did you not see the MPAAs PG-13 rating? And what is wrong with the cow scene. It was a prank and they are teenagers. That can happen in real life you know. The film was just taking a realistic approach, instead of the cheesy bullshit back in 1995.
 
I was saying that the PG-13 rating meant it's not only for kids because he said Power Rangers is a children's show. Kids were not only the aim of this recent movie.

But thats exactly my point, they didn't have an aim at all.

The beginning was for teens, the middle was a horror movie for adults and the end was a whimsical childrens film.
 
I also think it is diffcult to modernize old comics heroes in a good way. Marvel did a nice job with Captain America, keeping his overall appearance intact, but subtly changing his style to look relevant today (they even had the old circuss costume as a joke in the first movie). Or in the case of Wolverine, since Jackman was SO right for the role, it made the franchise work.

people do get awfully touchy when you change their comics!
 
TV nostalgia flicks often have nothing at all to do with the original series... Charlies Angels kind of started it right? But then, things like 21 Jump Street and Dukes of Hazzard and others just showed they were more interested in securing the rights to the title to draw nostalgia but threw everything else in a blender.
 
We can all guess but sfoster actually saw it so going with his assessment lol.

Yeah but power rangers demographic would only be targeting people like 30-36 years old.. comic books were printed for decades.
for entire generations even. they have a much much larger demographic.

I think the range is wider than that. By at least ten years and under. I also believe there have been multiple generations of Power Rangers shows.

As more and more content gets made, your best bet is to go niche and not broad. They were clearly targeting the die-hard fans of the series, which is a smart move, regardless of the film's quality.

Then, as always, you can count on the foreign audiences that like big dumb action movies, since it's harder to market a dialogue-driven film to them. I mean, Japan alone could've been their target audience from the beginning. This is right up their alley.
 
Power Rangers is still airing today. I'm not just taking about reruns, there have been a few reboots of the TV show and there is a current version airing now. Yes, I saw the movie in the theatre. No, I have not been a fan of any iteration of the TV show.
