Indiegogo Campaigns

With Kickstarter if you ask for $1000 and only raise $999 you get nothing. With indiegogo you can ask for $1000 get $100 and you get that money.

Now, if you really need $1000 to do your project, and you take the $100, shouldn't you have to give it back?

Doesn't it just seem too easy to get money from people and then not deliver what is promised?

I would redefine "need" and make the best $100 film I could.
And then work on my marketing skillz.

BTW, for Nick's Secret Santa gift that's why I went with the [Kickstarter] first to fund the [Indiegogo] campaign, from which we could keep all that we took in, which so far is only... £50. Thanks, Mad Hatter! ;)

If you don't like the way IGG works, don't use it. No need to bash them for their business model.

We used IGG for our CD, did not raise all the funds we needed, but used all those funds and the rest was self-financed. Mission accomplished.

I'm not bashing them. But, I do think it's a way for con artists to create a profile and scam people out of money. I'm going to be creating a page for Leading Lady, and it's mostly to cover the costs I've already incurred (and will incur). My project will be done one way or another. But, I can really use some help.

It's just a strange way of doing business. Because it really goes way beyond the honor system.

My being a moron at these things, I need to ask, why did you need to fundraise to fund a indiegogo campaign?

It was a industry joke.

My whole thing is a farce.

I know kickstarter is usually an all or nothing platform.
I know indiegogo is a take-what-you-get platform.

To make a video to panhandle for... I mean request crowdsource funds requires a small modicum of funds.
To use those initial funds to secure more funds to turn around and NOT produce a product (which is the typical route) and instead go onto a competitor crowdfunding site to generate additional funds just seemed rather ridiculous - so, of course that's what I put in my Secret Santa gift as a cornerstone.

You didn't think we was really gonna abduct professor Godden for the elf-cloned resurrected Dr. Shipman to perform Super High Intensity Transplant for Cerebrums on poor ol' Nick, did ya? ;)

I've subsequently found out that Professor Godden is a Professor at my college, of all places. If I ever meet him I'll be sure to redirect him to your page Ray ;)

I'm definitely onboard the 'IndieGoGo is borderline fraud' train.

I actually would bash their business model, sorry IT, because I think that whilst there are some honest citizens like yourself who wouldn't misuse or intentionally abuse that system, there are also a lot of people who, perhaps through naivety or ignorance, will end up wasting a lot of people's money. So whilst it might sometimes work, I think it's a poor business model to swear by when there's a much better and more honest alternative available (Kickstarter). Remember that with Kickstarter you can choose what your goal is and can raise as much over that as people are willing to donate. All it does it add that level of accountability to proceedings.

LOL! I'd rather you not.
I don't think that would do you or I any favors.
Yeah, I like to do my homework.

Did you already know who Shipman was?

Yeah, I didn't know how familiar you might be with your own homegrown nutty nutbags like we are with ours.
My God.
We've got 'em by the stadium full.
One in every WalMart, I think.

Yeah, I'm using kickstarter because it seems more "respectable" I think to the people you are trying to get to contribute. That being said, if I was a few hundreds bucks short as it came down to the wire I imagine my GF or son would be making a contribution to put us over the top.

I didn't take anyone's rights away to speak their mind, I just spoke mine.

If you don't like IGG then don't use it. If you don't like Kickstarter then don't use it. Are they ripping people off? They aren't forcing anybody to 'donate' money. People aren't as stupid one would think. They can think for themselves.

You gotta be smart which projects you donate/pledge money to. I won't pledge to projects that I have serious doubts on whether or not it will actually get finished. If the filmmakers / creators of the campaign have a proven track record and I like their current project then I'll pledge money. I still believe there are some good people out there.

I guess I'm just too far outside the industry.

I'll be in the corner.

By myself.

As always.

:(
LOL!
Will you please stop that!

Next time join the 2012 Secret Santa.
You can come sit by me.
I'll be sitting on top of the desk in the back of the classroom spitting spitballs at the cleavage of cheerleaders out the open window.
It's kinda like licking them by proxy. ;)

Nah, I think your OP had a handle on the issue.
I think you're just a nicer guy than I am and so you didn't see it quite as caustically as I and others do.
It looked like BS to me, too, but a fool and his money...
Freedom to succeed. Freedom to fail.

There is a campaign that has raised almost $200,000 (they weren't even asking anywhere near that) and they don't even have a finished script. We're all in the wrong business.
