Basic Production Experiences

trueindie asked myself and another to comment on how you'd manage to keep 20+ people around, with little-to-no-pay on a feature film of nano/micro-budget proportions. Here's the post:

I'm most definitely interested. Can't say no to production stories. They're all valuable, if I want to avoid mistakes.
Please tell the story in a new thread.

I didn't realize there was a WELCOME sub-forum either, so here's my hello to you guys n'gals as well. Brief history:

Moved away from Georgia about six years or so ago with an interest in this thing. Worked my way to the city by doing jobs unrelated to the industry, spent about two years working as a Digital Illustrator under an AD who was transitioning into marketing, bought an HVX200 on my savings, got laid off from work, founded a production company with three other good guys three years ago, never looked back.

Broke and mostly hungry, but still doing.

Shot half of a short, was unprepared, learned that it's fun to do, never finished it.

Less than a year ago, raised money through Kickstarter to shoot the feature I'm about to mention, is turning out okay at best, but what a great learning experience.

Hi.

So, here's some info, and the start of a thread that may prove to be useful to some searching for it.

Not me sir!

Absolutely no idea. In fact, I strongly believe that at this point, I would fail miserably if I tried to do it. So I tend to be a little less ambitious when I write my scripts. But hey, you don't really know what you're capable of unless you really try it. Maybe some of these other guys like gelder and kholi can tell us how they managed it. Would definitely be an interesting read.

Two years of writing twelve very distinct drafts of a high-concept, vfx driven feature film in my spare(ish) time. Several years of building a reel to showcase, not only to involved crew, but to simply get jobs to sustain life. Learning several aspects of production from pre-to-post, and being as gracious as possible.

I also paid as many people as possible, and apologized for rough shoots.

I managed to keep a cast of about twenty (20) over the course of a sporadic schedule this way. As well, the project had a lot to offer based on my ability to bring together assets, actors would definitely benefit from having great reel material, etc. Everyone had a very distinct job, which they would get credit for.

Still under budget (I think, anyway!) and almost done with post.

At the end of the day, I'm in the same boat as you guys! So, we should share production experiences and I'm open to questions if anyone has 'em.

And, thanks for having me on your boards.

Shoot it up!

Kholi, that reel just friggin rocked my friend. That's what I call a demo reel. If I were a big company, I'd hire you guys any time.

It's fantastic that you raised your kickstarter fund. That is just amazing. I don't know where you got those big backers, but looks like some people really believe in you and your abilities. Good for you my friend.

I can't tell you how good it felt to see that you raised the fund. I wish you the very best of luck. I'm holding out for Superseeds. If the demo reel is any indication, it looks like it's going to be one hell of a movie.

Thanks, sir. Having the opportunities to work with larger entities has been great, still learning a lot though.

Mostly by keeping in touch with the older generation and people who are interested in cultivating new talent. But, spamming the link and having people spam it on their pages helped. Haha. Felt terrible, but at the end of the day...

Will post the trailer here when it's done, that's about a week away. It's going through Sound Design and then Titles, then Color Correction etc before release.

I don't know how the movie's going to turn out to an audience, but either way we just want to make another feature. I'm already in pre-pro (and have raised some money) for the next. It's been less than a year on Superseeds, but I'm impatient in general and want to keep moving forward.

If you're in the UK, check out MovieScope Mag PG.31. One of my first print interviews is up. More to come in the next few weeks as we get closer to a trailer and the premiere of the feature.

^^ Thanks much for peeping.

Excellent, Kholi! It must feel good.

Thanks much. It's pretty cool. First one!

So far, just using the stills and VFX links, and company reel when contacting publications etc. and the Kickstarter link. Lots of people are interested in crowdfunding and having a successful campaign really helps with PR. The response has been pretty great, to the point where we decided to hold off on contact more until the trailer debuts.

So there are a few more print and web deals coming up, want to space them out by a few weeks so that the momentum feels natural and gives some time to digest.

Thanks for those two links! I saw the first one, but the second one not yet! The magazine hit Cannes already and should be on stands. Really like the article on funding, too. Great place to be beside me thinks.
