Why does 1AD call the roll?

Why does the 1AD call "turnover" or "sound/camera" when the director could easily say these things?
Is it so the director has piece of mind and can focus on the actors?

Why? It's their job.

The director could easily do a plethora of tasks on set. Just because they could, doesn't mean they should. Having others do their job allows the director to focus on their job... which focusing on the actors is one piece of the puzzle.

It's a union rule. Director can't talk to certain labour. It bumps up their pay.

Financially, it creates a job (not saying the 1st ad is not necesary).

Psychologically, it allows the director to diffuse/alter being perceived as a 'general', and more as an artist.
