Why Do Independent Films Have Such A Limited ROI?

Also, popularity data does help. Josh Friedman managed to get a season 2 of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles by showing the Fox TV programming executices youtube hits, Internet steaming videoes of repeats, and TV rating where the pilot episode is the most widely watched pilot in TV history and the season 1 had lots of hits on youtube and fan sites.

Placing well crafted spots in high traffic places with lots of visitors helps with that too.

I just saw Colombiana with a friend. He loved it, and I looked to see all the people in the theater. Then I think back to other action movies my friends like that follow the same formula. Yes it's true formulaic movies will get the ROI. They will not live one in the long run though. This movie will be forgotten in a year probably, compared to a more original action movie like say... Hanna maybe?

And what does any of this have to do with ROI on indie budget films? You keep trying to compare what you want to create with $70,000 to films with budgets over $30,000,000. They are completely different worlds.

"Hollywood is currently making a 270 million dollar version of "John Carter of Mars" which is public domain as far as I know."

Yep, I was a huge fan of the books as a kid. I imagine all the Edgar Rice Burroughs stuff is PD.

At last count I had 1.1 million internet views across multiple networks, mostly Vuze. It did absolutely nothing for me. Nobody in the industry surfs youtube for employees.

This is not true.

In fact, they're surfing for people with good work and a following more so than ever before. There are a number of youtube celebs that have been approached for various reasons by agencies etc.

1 million views isn't a lot at all, even across various web networks.

And I say this because we've been hired and had potential representation offers as a production company from two of THE biggest agencies in LA. You have heard of them.

If you can make your name on the internet, better believe that you've got bargaining power. Just go and see what Freddie Wong is doing.
