who controls finance

Lets say you bring in a Producer for your Independent film. And Financing is secured, who really controls who gets paid what??? Is it the Director / Writer who's idea it was too bring said Producer on, or is it the Producer who has a say??

It depends.

It's usually a combination of the producer, production manager, investors and agents depending on which roles. When people are brought on, there's usually some negotiating as part of the process, at least for the major roles. Some rates are just union rates, unless you're talking a non-union shoot.

There are no real rules. Just what usually happens.

After problems in the past with negotiations and 'too many cooks', I would say always appoint someone to take control of the finances. It just saves headaches, especially when unions get involved.

How are you bringing in a producer? Is he being hired?

If the producer is receiving a paycheck from someone else.. well it's that guy writing the paycheck that is in charge of the finances

I was going to hire a Freelance Producer...but I am meeting an Entertainment Lawyer next week, so will have a better idea of my next step. I want to raise the money without involving a Production Company, which is why i'm looking to go down the 'Freelance' route if required
