Which path to take?

Hey,

I currently work as a Media Op at a post production facility, however my real desire is to write/direct. I have recently completed my first feature screenplay with a partner, have started work on a sitcom for the UK market and will also be putting a short film into production within the next couple of months. Quite a lot on my plate I know!!

I would love, as I'm sure everyone would, to get my screenplay sold. I know its only my first one but you gotta dream big! I would also love to direct as I feel I really do have what it takes.

My question is, do I continue with making short films etc until I get my name and work recognised or try and work my way up the production ladder until I eventually make director?

I guess there are quite a few people in my posistion so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Carl

Put together some solid shorts. Assemble a trusted and tight knit crew that aren't after a huge paycheck, that are passionate without the price tag. Collaborate. Network. Network. Network.

If you plan to write and sell a screenplay, you better be studying your ass off, get the structure correct, or whatever you send will be disregarded. You can be taught how to TELL a story, but whether you have the story, who knows?

Throw yourself around some sets to begin with. See if you swim.

Although, I'm merely stating what you've already suggested, you're heading the right way, bud. Sounds as though you've got a good head on your shoulders.
