When recording, the capture stops and re-starts..???

It seems whenever I begin a new project, I get a new issue....:hmm:

Okay, I am capturing my footage...during the capture, which always looks as though it is in slightly slow motion, during the capture, the footage slows and stops and picks up again. It almost looks like a digital hit.

I have checked the tape so it is not the recording and it isn't the playback because it seemed to play it fine when I saw the problem and checked the camera for whether or not the heads were dirty on the recorded tape, thus making it stop when recording.

I do have a new external hard drive, but I was thinking that this should not be the problem.

This is a new one for me. Has anyone seen this particular issue? I don't care if I have to delete everything and recapture, but I want the footage to go in correctly so I can get started and not have this problem again....

....any thoughts?

I remember one time I was capturing thru vegas, and I was getting ALOT of dropped frames. I stoped the capture, made sure nothing else was running in the background, and it worked. But it seems like you have a fast computer...

What capture program are you using? Perhaps trying a different program?

What does the captured footage look like? Is it okay?

It looks as though I hit pause in the middle of the capture. I am attempting to see if sending the capture to the new hard drive will help. I am thinking that the problem is that though I thought I was saving to my new hard drive, I was not. So now I am testing a few things to see if it will fix the problem.

I am capturing in FCP...

EDIT: I have had the dropped frame problem and I am holding it at bay for the time being....meaning until I can PAY for the Quicktime upgrade to 7 or whatever....

What speed is your external drive? is it 5400 or 7200rpm?

Was the external drive connected while you were capturing?

Is the external connected to the same firewire bus as the camera?

Is this standard definition or HDV?

playback on the tape seems fine?

The speed is 7200. Yes, the external was connected, but everything was saving into my laptop which ended up only having about 2Ghz to operate in. So I am thinking that is the problem. Knightly helped me move everything from my laptop to my external, but the problem was still there. So basically, I will have to re-save all that footage.

I am extremely glad it was only about 30 minutes of footage...

...and I just looked up my T1 external again. I got it from overstock.com and just saw that the price went back up by $110 for my My Book Studio Edition external. I really lucked out there. It was an 'open box'/refurbished product so it cost less...
