What lens is appropriate for this shot?

The shot I want is at 1:01 into the clip:

I talked to a DP I plan on working with and he doesn't have a lens for that shot, however, he said to use a 50mm and just have the actors move in closer to each other. That will fool the audience into thinking it's that type of shot, and you can still have the actors further apart in the master shot. However, I tried this at a similar dinner table distance, like in that clip. If you start out with the master, than have people move in closer for the 1:01 shot, you can totally tell they have moved closer, rather than just looking closer, but knowing they are further apart. Having them move in closer doesn't seem to work and I will have to get a longer lens.

Maybe a 100mm but the store does have any with image stabilization, and I would like that since I am doing a steadicam shot, that starts out as that shot, but circles the scene after. The DP cannot come up with something on this one and neither can I. Any thoughts on what lens I should use or what I should do?

Thanks.

I don't know what they used particularly, but I could see the shot being recreated with a 80mm f1.4 lens. The background is blurred quite a bit, with the foreground rather sharp, especially the facial features. In that shot, a large aperture is defintley needed.

I was thinking around 80-100mm, but the aperture isn't as wide as one might think. Looks to me around 4-5.6 on 100mm, shot from just behind the other actor.
