What is this freeze frame affect called

I don't even know what I am trying to ask on this one but I'm gona try for the sake of the internet maybe at least one person will know what I am talking about. I have an idea for the open credits for my film. It is something that has been done before but I always liked it. The opening would show the characters doing some kind of activity that matches the character they are. Only it freeze frames for a sec and then goes to another character and so on and so on.

The question is I have seen videos sometime in my life where when it freezes on a character that it turns into a mix between cartoonish/ real person. What is that affect called? anybody know? It's so hard to explain let alone type it up.

There are a lot of ways to do that. You want exactly the cartoon effect? Or do you want the "mortal kombat finish him" effect, when the background goes dark and the actor get a saturated color above it? Or the 'collage effect', when the actor appears like a paper cut?

There are really a lot of ways.

Hm... do you know something about editing / compositing? Which editing software are you using?

A mask is a resource used to hide or show a specific area of an image. With this, you can take control of this area without change the rest. In your case, you need to mask the actor in order to be able to work on him separately from the background.

Also, you need to manipulate the velocity of the take to freeze the frame. In most softwares you will use a velocity envelope. An envelope is a line in which you can add nodes to control the behavior of the effect through the time.

It looks hard but is quite simple.

I use Vegas, so I don't remember how to make it on Adobe Premiere. But the concepts are absolutely the same. If you research for this things, you will be able to do this.

So, you have to learn:

1) How to manipulate the velocity of the video, to freeze the frame you want; the better way to do this is using velocity envelopes.
2) Duplicate the video track;
3) How to create a mask;
4) With the mask designed, how to manipulate the color and the brightness of both tracks to generate the effect. And of course, make experiences with different options until you get what you saw in your mind. To manipulate this attributes through the time, you will need to learn keyframes too.

In response to Fernando. You can't make (decent) masks in Premiere so you'd have to either do it in After Effects or export the frame you want as an image file and edit it in photoshop. I can see this working relatively well if you are experienced in these programs :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpuQL1AUkm8i believe what you need is an effect called the 3d photo, but in your case you are manipulating it to go from character to character.

here is a tutorial for the 3d photo effect, you would then need your imaginiation how to make the rest work, i would tell you how but i think its simple enough to keep having a try for yourself.

The end credits to Tropic Thunder came to mind for me. Although I couldn't find a clip of those, here's a kid that made a "tribute" to the end credits.
Is it something like this?

On Sony Vegas we use the bézier curves to mask non-linear objects. I don't know if there is a similar thing on Premiere.

But since he is the director, he must frame the scene thinking about it. The clothes, the frame, the light, I think all this must be oriented to help the masking if he is not an experienced editor.

LAS VEAGAS

-That's it!!! yes! thats the one how do I do that, ah I am excited thanks i was going insane trying to explain this to people. haha they looked at me like I was crazy and of course Tropic thunder a movie I have only seen once which is why I couldn't think of it. What did you do to achieve it and can i do that on Adobe?
