what is the right amount? (crowd funding)

so my short version of my film Seishin Movie is going to be shot and complete by august and its coming together very nicely, its my first ever film and im confident it will do well, then the plan was to show the short version for free and entice people to be drawn to the prospect of a full feature version, this would lead to a crowdfunding campaign, one of which I did first time with no promotion, no known actors and naff all really.

This time I have grown have an awesome cast and have prepared more in-depth.

Now for us to have a good feature I was thinking of asking around £3,000 which after the fees (still unsure about uk tax) would equate to around £2500 minimum.

but then I was thinking maybe thats not enough, why not ask for £20,000 and make it one heck of a movie!

or am i being greedy... but what i keep thinking is, if i can get similar results for free compared to £3,000 then whats the point i might aswell go the full whack ?

The right amount is just what you need, tempered somewhat by what you can realistically get. With a range of 2500-20,000 I feel like maybe you haven't really worked out how much you actually need?

your right I havent, Im not experienced enough to know what money could buy me as i was brought up get it for free itl taste better, Perhaps I should discuss with someone about what Costs could buy us, some good food for thought for myself i think.

How can you run a crowdfunding campaign, when you don't know how much you need? :hmm:

Btw, WheatGrinder posted an interesting rant about lo-level crowdfunding that turned out to be quite good reasoning. I can't find the link offhand, but essentially - how much effort do you need to put into a crowdfunding campaign over 60/90 days to raise $2000 vs. the effort involved in shooting a wedding on a Saturday? I'm sure someone will link it.

yeah iv seen that thread, Im more leaning towards the £20,000 to get a real production value to it, il see what happens once iv budgeted everything.

I don't want to be 'that' guy but I would highly recommend you to give up of the idea of getting 20 000 .

It is your first short film and perhaphs you love it ,however most people will think that your first effort will be total crap .

Even though I have no experience in crowdfunding , most people will donate if they see you stand out somehow , think of what's making your film truly unique . And if there is no such thing , I will advise you to make couple of film , get your name out there and then try to get so much money .

I do highly believe that with a lot of phone calls and attitute of a nice guy making a movie for fun and maybe couple of festivals you can achieve A LOT .

But hey , just my opinion .

I wish you best of luck with your short !

absolutely your right, but as the saying goes, if i dont try then I will always say what if...

I failed the first time, learned my mistakes, Im booking interviews with quite a few biggish names, I even got a professional motion graphics designer to work on my film for free.

Iv done research, Im connecting networks..

lets see in august if my plan goes ahead.

I'd say go for the larger amount. Can you film the feature to reasonably good standard in the £2500? If so, when planning your could think about using the extra money to possibly get a minor celeb or 2 too appear? or find someone who's s*it hot at marketing & promotion. They could come in handy when looking for distribution?

One thing I would say, which I'm finding out myself, when calculating how much you need, be sure to include the costs to making & posting the rewards. That could be a killer if you manage to reach your goal then find you need to pay out a grand or two to get things made and sent out
