What is ADR?

The term that has the most currency with audio post folks is Automated Dialog Replacement, since the consensus is that there is nothing "automatic" about it.

I've read "Automated Dialog Replacement" but I've never heard
anyone actually use the term. Every audio person I've worked
with (so far) has always called it "Additional Dialog Recording".
I wonder where the "automated" came from. There is very
little that is automated about the process. I suppose the change
happened when "looping" was rendered unnecessary.

Okay, a bit if a thread hijack - but hopefully people will check
out sonnyboo's video.

NO! This being it's own thread is a horrible mistake. I tried to post my link as a response to a whole other thread. I never asked what ADR was, as I have been doing that on my own movies for over 10 years now...

Hashing out the 2 interpretations of what ADR stands for is a good thing. I believe in a technical sense, both terms have equal use, at least in my professional experience.
