What do I do?

I have an idea for what I think would be a great documentary. The format could be used as a book also, and I think it would be successful. If you were in the same position, what what you do first, the book or the film?

Another question might be, how many people read books on documentaries? Many books made into movies are because the books were very popular and had a built in audience. How many people would read your book?

I think this is a common misconception based on a series of high-profile cases. I actually think that when you look at the number of movies that are adapted from half decent books then you'll see that the ratio is pretty even.

Remember that Stand by Me, The Shining, Shawshank Redemption...etc are all adapted from stories by Stephen King.

All very good movies that I enjoyed immensely. I still preferred the books. Books adapted from movies are just sad money grabs in my experience and opinion.

Sadly, more than would watch your movie.

That's a strange question. Are you a writer or a film maker? If you make a great book that sells successfully you could get funding for a film but that's very unlikely. Maybe it would be easier to sell and get people interested in a low budget Indy film than a book. If I was you I would make a short teaser film, promote it and put it up online. That way if you either write a book or make a film you'll have an an audience for it built already.ax
