What Camera/Camcorder should I get?

I have little to no experience filming besides recording clips on my phone and obviously I need something better. I just want something that will get me started. I want to be able to film in HD but beyond that I don't know what I need. Budget $300

Uh, no on the dlsr.

Stick with a cheap used videocamera and play with it for awhile. Pretty soon it'll become apparent to you what kind of camera you really want to get and whether or not you want the headaches of a DSLR.

Wow. Price went up on those, even used: http://www.ebay.com/ctg/Canon-Vixia...3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A5848&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Ugh! Don't waste money on the step-down Canon FS40. That 1/6-inch CCD is gonna blow.

What you're looking for is something with:
- the biggest d@mn CMOS sensor you can afford (1/3 will be about the limit at that price range) http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/16/engadget-primed-why-your-cameras-sensor-size-matters/
- manual focus
- manual aperture
- the miniDV tape vs. SD disk argument rages (SD will make your life much simpler, though)
- ext. minijacks for microphone and headphones will be gravy.

A DSLR isn't a good choice for a first camera. Poor audio means
you need an audio recorder and without accessories focus can
be a problem. A good camera to get you started would be the
Canon M40 Ray mentioned.

I don't know about you At 24FPS, but my head spins with all
the technical talk (no offense Ray) and at your level and budget
top specs may not matter. You can learn to make good movies
without a camera with the top tech specs. Of course that
depends on your, personal focus. If you're a tech guy then specs
are important. I'm the creative type - I let the tech-types think
about the specs and I work on the creative stuff.

At $300 you are very limited in your choices. Go to Amazon or
better yet B&H and buy the camera you can afford. There is
really no difference in your price range.

Regarding the M40 it is using some of that mumbo jumbo magic to get 24p ...24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i)

Canon Vixia HV30 or HV40 camcorders are great and within your budget. Look for them on ebay and you should get a pretty decent price.

Just note that they shoot video to DV tape at 1440x1080 resolution interlaced.

just look on ebay. i recently grabbed a Canon HF100 for $130, and it works/looks excellent. It has 24 and 30p, mic and headphone jacks, shoots in full HD, threaded front for attaching wide/fisheye/telephoto lenses, manual focus, a NON-touchscreen LCD screen (i don't know why all the camcorders are moving towards touchscreen lcd screens, it just makes you smudge up the screen that you need to see clearly). Anyways, if possible, grab up a Canon. especially in the low budget bracket, they have the best features.

This is the Canon Vixia HF100 right? Looking into them based on what you said and wanted to make sure i go the right one and you were just leaving out the Vixia portion.
