what are the best free software resources for filmmakers

I'm trying to build up a comprehensive list of the best free software resources for any aspect of film making:

So, I'm thinking stuff like Celtx, Blender, etc. etc.

I'm also interested in what demo versions of software allow you to use the software in unconventional ways, but that are still useful for production.

So, for instance... the demo version of Vidvox, which is VJ software, doubles up as a portable TV studio, if you know how to configure it... and because the only restriction on the demo is the ability to save presets, it doesn't alter it's ability to mix multiple live video feeds, in real time.

I'm also interested in any leads on free plugins.

I am going to post all links on 1000dollarfilm... I wanted to be upfront about this right from the start. I just want everyone to be able to benefit from out collective experience.

MD, is there a reason why you don't want to use, or don't have iMovie? iMovie comes free with OS X, so if it's not on your system, you should be able to install it from the install disks ... unless of course you choose not to use it.
