Whadda this whadda that?

Hey there filmmakers,

I have a question. What kind of comedies are the most popular today? You know, ranging from physical comedy to witty comedy? Anything?
Id appreciate your feedback!

Thanks

Crude humor is popular, yes, but the movies that really build a following bring something more -- a human element with heart. Like "40 Year Old Virgin".

Absurd comedy seems to be pretty popular too. And overgrown man-childs. Adult men who still act like they're 17.

Romantic comedies are pretty damn popular.

I've actually started watching that long running, Brit-Com, Last of the Summer Wine. I had viewed the last few years of it's run and now PBS is starting from the beginning of the series (1972, 73,). It's actually quite refreshing to see a series which started off, and remained, very witty ...and mixed with a smidge of screwball. I think there's still a niche for this type of comedy, or I sure hope there is.

Parody movies are pretty popular.

How else would they still be making Scary Movie 15? And the countless other branch-offs, Disaster Movie, etc...

Same thing with the "Vampires Suck" movie, and Shaun of the Dead I think fits into that category one way or another.

But Don't forget to stamp an "Unra***" sticker on the DVD case or no-one will take a second glance at it.

I would like to object to Shaun of the Dead being put in the same category as Scary Movie - it's much cleverer than that. Watching Airplane and The Naked Gun series shows just how well a screwball parody can be done, and how crass and unoriginal the Scary Movie writers are.

Has anybody seen "Four Lions"? Possibly the funniest film I've seen in a long time. Extremely black, but filled with absolutley rediculous slapstick comedy, it's quite bizzare...

Loved it. It ended up being more of a buddy comedy than a satire on the War on Terror, but it was still Chris Morris through and through.

Agreed. Here's the scary part though, despite it's massive critical success, Four Lions has just barely made its miniscule budget back starting with DVD and Blu Ray. So if the best of the bunch is barely not a commercial failure, can anything win in this genre? I'm thinking no, as much as I love dark humor.

Which makes me respect the people that do it consistently, knowing the same thing I do.

Critical success doesn't always eaqual commercial success though, so you're quite right, something like black comedy is always going to struggle.

I guess Chris Morris is the master of black comedy then. The "Brass Eye" special was one of the funniest things i've ever seen on TV. But I can understand why it upset so many people.
