Viewfinder vs external screen

I have used neither.

I understand that you use both for previewing your picture?
So why should you prefer a viewfinder to an external screen?
I just started shooting scripted videos, what do you think is recommended/necessary?
I sometimes had troubles with focusing and just realized it when it was too late, especially with a narrow depth of field.

I guess it's a matter of preference, and tradition in a way.

On nearly all sets I've worked on, the Camera Operator will use the camera's viewfinder, or an EVF connected to the camera, and the Director will get sent a feed to a larger external monitor. Sometimes, the camera assistant will also have an external monitor. This can sometimes be up to the camera assistant's preference - some can't pull off marks, others won't pull off anything but. On-camera monitors are also often used for framing when the cam op cannot physically use the viewfinder - ie, sometimes handheld shots, or tricky jib or crane shots, dolly shots (depending on the dolly) etc.
